5 Questions with OWW Member Brian Sobb

1. How did you get your start in the gaming hobby?

A. My friend Bryan and I, back in the mid-late 80’s (we were about 12 years old), were always hanging out playing video games and GI Joe. One day he found his brother’s old D&D modules and shared them with me. That was some really neat reading for a pre-teen who spent about half his time with his nose in a book, and the other half daydreaming of dinosaurs, castles, Star Wars, etc.…. Anyways, stuck in among the D&D modules was the 1st Edition Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader rulebook. We were *instantly* hooked, and spent just about all our allowance for the next several years on Games Workshop figures. We played all of the old-school GW stuff: Space Hulk, Dark Future, Warhammer and W40K, Adeptus Titanicus……

2. We understand that there are never enough hours in the day for all the gaming we’d like to do, but what are you currently playing?

A. Yep, so many good games, so little time…. I am actually on a bit of a gaming hiatus. Not spending too much time on anything in particular. That being said, I’ve recently introduced a bunch of my co-workers to Settlers of Catan, and I’m pretty sure they are all addicted now. I’m still playing some Warhammer in the Great Lakes Warhammer League. Aerodrome is pretty much the best historical game I have ever played, and I play whenever I can. I’d like to be playing some Flames of War, but all my stuff is packed away from a recent home remodeling project! I also love to play video games on my PC, Xbox and Playstation 2. I have quite the little geek room in my house that is full of video games and Warhammer miniatures!

3. Outside of actually playing, what other areas of the gaming hobby do you take part in?

A. I love to paint. I actually enjoy painting as much as playing. Because of the OWW Origins projects, I have learned an awful lot about terrain building over the last year. Some of the OWW guys are *amazing* terrain builders. And I am also starting to find a lot of happiness in introducing new people to the hobby. I know how neat of a life-long hobby it is, and it’s nice to know that I can pass along some of my experience to people who are just getting started.

4. Your Top 5 Games of All Time are?

A. In no particular order: 1) Warhammer – massive armies squaring off, great minis, and the ruleset is still the best 2) Aerodrome – don’t get me started on how good this game is. 3) Settlers of Catan – best, most addicting board game of all time – as evidenced by the support group I’m going to have to start for my coworkers! 4) Epic Armegeddon – the newest rule set is such a good game, it’s a shame nobody plays it 5) Warhammer 40k – I don’t play much anymore, but some of the best times I’ve ever had were spent playing 40k….. (let’s out a long, sad sigh)

5. What are you gaming-related goals for the next 12 months?

A. Last year I won my first Golden Demon, so I’d like to back that up and prove to myself that it wasn’t a fluke! I think this is going to be the year that Aerodrome explodes onto the national scene, so I’d like to give a little of my time to help that happen. And I’d like to help the Olde World Warriors grow and establish themselves as a top gaming club in the Midwest.
